The Secret to Health & Fitness

There really is a secret sauce to all of this... it's not sexy, but it gets results.

After I committed to play soccer at UC, I remember needing to dial in my running fitness. That had always been one of my weaker points and I knew I had to improve that if I wanted to pass fitness testing. You see, I was quick, but my endurance sucked. From that point on, I stayed after practices to run laps. I literally just ran and ran around the field. It wasn't fun and it took a lot of time, but I knew I needed to stick with it to get better. Then, when we were sent our fitness testing for pre-season, I was even more worried. With the season over, those after practice laps became early morning testing and, you guessed it, more running.

I was desperate to get better and improve this. And, you know what? After essentially a year and a half of running like that (along with very specific lifting, skill work, and dedicated recovery), I decreased my mile time by over 30 seconds to get ahead of standards.

There were definitely days I didn't want to show up and do the same, boring thing. There were vacations that I had to make time to go for my runs. But at the end of that last summer, I had the results I wanted.

So, what's the secret? I told you it wasn't sexy. That secret is consistency. It's the ability to show up for yourself over and over again over long periods of time. That's it. It really is that simple (but simple doesn't mean easy).

Continue showing up for yourself. That's your responsibility. Just keep showing up. And if you need help with that, reach out.
